Can I Do a HYROX Event with Only My CrossFit Training?
One of the most common questions we've been getting lately is whether someone can successfully complete a HYROX event if Invictus Everyday Fitness sessions are their main training source. For most people who have been training for at least one year with us, the answer is yes. In fact, I've seen plenty of CrossFit athletes sign up for a HYROX event with very little event-specific preparation and perform well. They may not find themselves on the podium, but they finish the race, enjoy the experience, and often realize they were more prepared than they thought.
The reason CrossFit carries over so well is that many of the qualities developed in our Everyday Fitness track are the same qualities that contribute to success in HYROX. Strength, muscular endurance, work capacity, mental toughness, and the ability to continue performing while fatigued are all important. If you've been consistently following Invictus programming, you've been developing those qualities for months or years. When you look at the movements involved in a HYROX event, we do most of them weekly: sled pushes, sled pulls, rowing, skiing, farmer carries, walking lunges, burpees, and wall ball shots.
Where most athletes notice the biggest difference is the running. A HYROX event includes eight separate one-kilometer runs, each followed by a workout station. That’s 8000 meters of running (5 total miles). While a single kilometer isn't particularly challenging for most members, the cumulative effect of repeatedly running and then immediately transitioning into another demanding task can be surprisingly difficult. Many athletes find that the stations themselves aren't the limiting factor. Instead, it's their ability to maintain a consistent running pace throughout the event while managing fatigue that ultimately determines their performance.
This is where your individual goal becomes important. If your primary objective is to complete a HYROX event and have fun, then training in Everyday Fitness may be all the preparation you need. A member who trains consistently (at least 3 days per week) should have enough fitness to successfully finish the event. The strength is there. The conditioning is there. The movement competency is there. For many first-time participants, that's all they need.
The equation changes slightly when performance becomes the priority. If you're hoping to achieve a specific finish time, place well within your division, or compete at a higher level, then additional HYROX-specific training becomes increasingly valuable (good news for you is that we offer HYROX programming)!
The same principle applies to almost every athletic endeavor. A CrossFit athlete can complete a marathon, but the athlete who spends months specifically preparing for a marathon will perform better. HYROX is no different. As your goals become more specific, your training should gradually become more specific as well.
One of the advantages of training at Invictus is that we offer both CrossFit and HYROX programs. This allows members to adjust their training based on their goals. Someone who wants to maintain broad fitness while preparing to complete their first HYROX event may do very well following mostly CrossFit programming while occasionally participating in HYROX programming. That approach allows them to continue building strength and general fitness while gaining familiarity with the unique demands of the race.
On the other hand, if you have a HYROX event on the calendar and you're looking to maximize your performance, it makes sense to gradually increase the number of HYROX days you train each week. Those sessions are designed around the specific demands you'll encounter on race day. You'll spend more time running, more time practicing the event stations, and more time learning how to pace yourself across longer efforts. The more exposure you have to those demands in training, the more comfortable you'll feel when race day arrives. I also advise those interested in performing well to gradually increase their weekly running volume.
Our Everyday Fitness program at Invictus provides an outstanding foundation for HYROX. It develops strength, conditioning, resilience, and confidence. For many athletes, that foundation is enough to complete the event successfully. For athletes who want to perform at their highest level, adding more HYROX-specific training and adding in additional weekly running volume can help unlock higher levels of performance. Either way, every class you attend at Invictus is helping prepare you for the challenge ahead.
